Holidays to Mie & Wakayama with If Only

Mie and Wakayama are adjoining prefectures on Honshu’s Kii Peninsula in the south of the Kansai region. For many they represent the real Japan. A few short hours from Osaka or Nara, a forested inland is home to rocky peaks and cascading waterfalls. Through this bountiful land runs the ancient pilgrimage trail Kumano Kodo, an UNESCO recognised network linking sacred sites. Rushing rivers lead to a rugged coastline of fascinating rock formations, warm seas and some age-old traditions among the female free-divers who fish these waters.

Highlights

Away from city life visitors find the time and space to really connect with nature. Take walks, soak in onsen, swim, and dine on freshly caught seafood.

Ise-Shima National Park

A protected area since 1946, Ise-Shima is an area of great biodiversity and maritime heritage. Kayak Ago Bay among the coastline’s forested islets, or hike cliff trails with views of the Pacific Ocean. The Nakiri to Katada route passes the Daiozaki Lighthouse.

Ise-Jingu Shrine

Ise-Jingu Shrine

Of all Japan’s shrines, the Naiku within the Ise-Jingu complex is considered the most sacred, and many Japanese make the pilgrimage here at least once. Shrouded in ritual and surrounded by forests and waterways, this is a place to pay respects to the spirit of Japan.

Diving

The tip of the Kii Peninsula marks Honshu’s southern-most point, offering excellent scuba and snorkelling spots situated just offshore. It’s possible to see coral, jellyfish, octopus, sea turtles, rare fluorescent sea anemones and colourful and unusual fish in the warm waters.
