Holidays to North East India and Kolkata with If Only

More of an experience than a destination, Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) was the British capital in India for years, with a rich cultural heritage. Millionaires and beggars alike populate this heaving metropolis, a gateway to North East India. Darjeeling is synonymous with tea, and the emerald plantations at the foot of the Eastern Himalayas offers a welcome refuge from the heat and chaos of India's cities.

Head south of Kolkata along the Hoogly river to the Sundarbans part of the Ganges Delta, a 10,000 square kilometre expanse of mangrove swamp and forested islands formed by silt washed down from the mighty Himalayas. The Sundarbans are home to the famous Bengal Tiger and other wildlife including Saltwater Crocodiles, Gangetic Dolphins, and Monitor Lizards.

Time for tea

Darjeeling, synonymous with tea, is perched upon a ridge some 2,200m up in the Himalayas around 600km north of Kolkata. Loved by the British and still popular with domestic and foreign visitors, Darjeeling affords stunning mountain vistas with many an ice capped peak on the horizon including Kanchenjunga, the worlds third highest peak. The Toy Train is a popular tourist attraction. This small gauge train has been granted World Heritage status.
